Time, Space and Dreaming

Respecting intuition is second nature for indigenous cultures, which are dream based. Amazonian Achuar rise every morning, purge what is left in their stomachs from the night before then share their dreams. Dream content orients an Achuar to the day’s events. Prophetic dreams are also taken seriously. Yet, “dream based” refers not only to tribes who honor night dreams; but to those who embrace life as reverie. Meaning lies beyond appearance whether a snake in the long house or a wilted plant by the edge of a trail. As is true of sleeping dreams, ordinary reality is pliable. In the trance of life, time and space are not solid. For instance, the luminous blue and white orbs that hover through the rainforest at dusk defy conventional logic. These are known by indigenous people to be beings from other times, locations, even other planets. Shamanic balls of light freshly caught my attention in Siberia.

While meeting with Tuvan and Siberian tribes I crossed paths with a compelling woman in Hakassia, Siberia. The cold overnight train rides had made me delirious with fever so I asked this large, cherub faced woman for a healing. She scraped me from shoulders to toes with a dull 24 inch knife, purged my energy field by placing the flames of a blow torch near my skin and kneaded my muscles with hands that resembled a cattle rustler’s. It was excruciating. Yet, by the time Anga had finished with me I was healed. Grateful, I thanked the shamanka and gave her an Amazon seed necklace made by Ecuadorian Shuar women. In receiving it Anga beamed, “I travel through the rainforest all the time as a ball of light. I have never been there in this physical body, but I know that the rainforest is my true home.”

Anga’s words made it hard for me to reduce rainforest orbs to metaphor or myth. I pictured the Shuar of Ecuador or the Brazilian Uru-e-wau-wau watching Anga of Siberia, a radiant sphere, floating through their jungle. A few years later when a similar ball of light appeared in a photo taken of the birch tree grove my apprentices named the Bridge of Light (described in Chapter Four), we recognized that the orb was conscious.

According to indigenous view, past, future and even geographical distance are not as we think. All are here and now. Time/space travel is a given; expansive reality is in the mix of everyday. Extraterrestrial beings, dead ancestors, shamans from distant cultures, zip through the night sky as balls of light. Likewise, a shaman might see my dream forsythia inseparably from the forsythia at my workshop location. For most of us, reality stacks up neatly like a, b and c or one, two and three. Space is solid, each form separate from the other. Time passes in predictable, linear increments; the past has happened, the present is now, the future has not yet occurred. For shamanic peoples this is not true. Time and space are relational, part of a multi-faceted whole.
